This week, during our first segment, we talk with Darlena Harris and her daughter Shariba, united after 31 years while mom was in prison; during the second segment, our guest will be Brooklyn film maker Evelyn Oliver discussing the debut screening of her movie, “The Testimony of a Devotee”; finally, Larry White of the Fortune Society will update us on the latest developments regarding parole reform legislation. Join us as we provide a public forum for the voices of the community most directly affected yet historically excluded from the dialogue and the decision making process.

RUDOLFO SALM Stop Belo Monte The Brazilian government is planning to build Belo Monte, what would be the world’s third- largest hydroelectric project on one of the Amazon’s major tributaries, the Xingu. One of more than 100 large dams being planned for the Brazilian Amazon, Belo Monte would divert the flow of the Xingu River and devastate an extensive area of the Brazilian rainforest, displacing over 20,000 to 40,000 people and threatening the survival of Indigenous peoples.

Arts Magazine
Screening Room: Children Of Invention. While the Oscars heaped accolades on the eve of International Women's Day, on movies like Precious and The Blind Side that demonize ghetto mothers living in poverty, Asian American filmmaker Tze Chun in contrast conveys a candid yet compassionate dramatic portrait based on his own childhood with a struggling single undocumented immigrant working mother, under the impact of a brutal social system that couldn't care less. And, while surviving foreclosure, homelessness, worker exploitation and the INS. A conversation with Tze Chun. And...Stephen Wolf, sitting in for Mary Ann Miller, with poet Tonya Bolden.

Eco-Logic
Eco-logic host, Ken Gale asks what creates an environmental activist? For some, it is a love of nature catalyzed by a specific time or place or element. Going into nature to look at trees or birds often, perhaps inevitably, leads to environmental activism because the birds or trees "become friends and neighbors." Joining him was David Sibley, who is doing for the next generation with his nature guides, what Ken Gale thinks Roger Tory Peterson did in the 20th century and what John James Audubon did in the 19th century. They discussed his books, of course, particularly his bird and tree books, but they also the craft of doing different types of nature art, the connection between bird-watching and environmental activism and the effect of buildings on bird populations. Buildings probably kill a billion birds per year worldwide and every bird killed saves the lives of hundreds of insects. Protecting forest and water for wildlife helps human health and vice versa. Being in nature makes protecting it less abstract and more personal.

Building Bridges
International Working Woman’s Day Special: Your Home, My Work. Domestic workers tell their stories - stories of their pains, their pride and their efforts to organize for labor rights. Since slavery, the domestic work force has been predominately women of color. With the abolition of slavery African-American women were still the predominate workers, as immigrant women began to enter that workforce. Today, largely women of color, from around the world work as domestic workers. Everyday, 200,000 domestic workers (nannies, companions for the elderly, housekeepers) in New York make it possible for their employers to go to work. Most are employed without a living wage, healthcare, and basic labor protections. Domestic work is vital to the economy and the community, but domestic workers remain invisible, vulnerable, and undervalued. “Your Home, My Work” recognizes and values domestic laborers and their unity in pushing for a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.

Equal Time for Freethought
Two-part (belated) Darwin Day Special! What's all the Fuss About? Darwinism and its Discontents Featuring Dr. Joseph Graves, Jr. and Dr. John Bellamy Foster As we have just bypassed both the 200th anniversary of the great Naturalist Charles Darwin's birth on February 12th, and the 150th anniversary of perhaps the most influential scientific text of all time "On the Origin of Species" (11/24/09) - the humanist and Freethought community in general, and the world at large, has once again grappled with the significance of the scientific theory of evolution via natural selection. In most of the developed world, and elsewhere, Darwin's theories have not only been understood and championed, but put to the real tests of understanding not only the origins and complexity of life forms on Earth, but via the treatment of diseases for which evolution's tenets are absolutely vital. Still, populations - usually those where religion still carries great meaning for many people (particularly the Abrahamic religions), including many states in the US have not only been reluctant to embrace evolutionary science, but have actively fought against the teaching of evolution and it's very existence. more...

Naked truths, powerful books, honest revelation. A 2 part discussion special on the show that brings the world of books to the airwaves. Part 1: HIV & AIDS; what if the man you lay down with every night, whom you loved and married, walked down the aisle carrying HIV but failed to tell you – and you went on to continue to have sex with him, without knowing and without being told. And what if you were a healthy young woman, dating Prince Charming, working two jobs until one day you get so sick you are rushed to the emergency room and continue to deteriorate to the point where your mother starts making funeral arrangements – finally to be diagnosed as HIV? Authors Marvelyn Brown and LaJoyce Brookshire share their stories and lessons. In Part 2; Mama Knows! 1 in 3 girls is sexually abused, each number tells a story. Stories of disclosure, consequences, and healing. Two books of women’s journey’s to healing from the painful reality of being sexually abused, telling mamas and dealing with the consequences; authors Amanda Richardson and Deloris Jordan join us. Off The Page is produced by Centric Productions research by Nicole Harris; hosted by Esther Armah. www.offthepage.net.

FIRST VOICES INDIGENOUS RADIO
Concepcion, Chile - Jose Alywin - Observatorio Ciudadono The 8.8 magnitude earthquake on February 27th, ultimately exposes the political elite and the media who deny, that of a country where affluence coexists with material poverty, the First World with Third World. Despite the efforts they have made for years to show Chile as a winner, a country which allows the North Amerian Free Trade Agreement and more recently, its incorporation into the OECD, in the top leagues, as if all its inhabitants were invited to the same party, the earthquake has revealed the social inequality that still exists in the country.
The Native Women's Association of Canada - Kate Rexe - Director of NWAC.
There are 520 known cases of missing or murderd Aboriginal women and girls entered into the NWAC database. NWAC believes there are many more cases that have not yet been documented, especially for earlier decades. In Canada where the Indigenous population makes up less than 2% of the Canadian population, if compared to the rest of the population their death and disappearance rate would be equivalent to over 18,000 Canadian women and girls missing or murdered in the past thirty years.
Ofelia Rivas - Voice Against the Wall imprisoned in southern Chiapas and recently released while supporting Zapatistas. She lives on Tohono O'odham land on the US/Mexico border and exposes the human rights abuses of the US Border Patrol and ongoing militarization of the border and O'odham land.

How green is Manhattan? Tune into Wake Up Call, for Part 4 of the 'Greening of the Ghetto'. We travel through each of New York's borough and the tri-state area to see just how green they are. Tomorrow the spotlight is on Manhattan. The government pushes the power of the green economy, but what's happening on the ground? We follow the money trail; ask where the green jobs are; explore how much job training is being done, by whom and where; explore the green housing issue and we challenge the elected officials about their green support of their borough. Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President; Paul Freitag, Director of Development, Jonathan Rose Companies; James Subudhi, Environmental Policy & Advocacy Coordinator / WE ACT for Environmental Justice and Douglas Cohen, Co-Founder of GreenWorks NYC. Hosed by Esther Armah.

Tune in to Out-FM for a fundraising special about the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal produced by members of the Out-FM collective. The case of Mumia Abu-Jamal has galvanized much of the progressive community including parts of the LGBT community. Mumia, an outspoken advocacy journalist from Philadelphia, is currently held on death row for a crime many do not believe he committed. Abu-Jamal's trial was full of constitutional violations, prosecution witnesses who made "deals" with the prosecution, an incompetent defense attorney and a hanging judge. Tune in to learn from film maker William Francome, who made "In Prison My Whole Life", J.Patrick O'Conner, author of "The Framing of Mumia Abu-Jamal, and Hans Bennett, organizer of Journalists for Mumia why they think Mumia is innocent, deserves a fair trial, and should be set free. The show aired from 10am to 1pm.

Gary Greenberg: “Manufacturing Depression: The Secret History of a Modern Disease” Is depression manufactured? Two decades after the introduction of antidepressants, it’s become commonplace to assume that our sadness can be explained in terms of a disease called depression. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than 14 million Americans suffer from major depression every year and more than three million suffer from minor depression. Some 30 million Americans take antidepressants at a cost of over $10 billion a year. Gary Greenberg argues that while depression can be debilitating, it has also been largely manufactured by doctors and drug companies as a medical condition with a biological cause that can be treated with prescription medication. Law and Disorder was pre-empted.

Building Bridges
Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story. Michael Moore has the guts and smarts to get away with a critique of capitalism in a mass forum. As the American dream turns into a nightmare for more and more of us, he compares capitalism to a love affair gone astray - lies abuse and betrayal. He takes a look at the core of our basic system and contends that we can do better. Moore’s "Capitalism" is the culmination of his previous works and a look into what a more hopeful future could look like if we changed gears, really democratized our economy, dealt with the increasing disparity of wealth distribution and explored a systemic alternative, socialism. There is much to learn from Moore, particularly about how he communicates with a mass audience on what is generally a taboo topic. Produced & Hosted by Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash. www.buildingbridgesradio.org

I Play what I Like: What is the Price of Freedom?
I Write What I Like is the posthumously published selection of the writings of Steve Biko (12/18/46 - 9/12/77), a father of South Africa’s Black Consciousness movement. After banning orders intended to stifle his voice and political activity, police agents of the apartheid government brutally murdered Biko while he was in their custody. Tapes of the “confession” at the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC) can be seen at www.law.yale.edu/trc. Though denied amnesty by the TRC because they failed to tell the truth, none of his killers were prosecuted.

Equal Time for Freethought
Special 2-Hour Fund Drive Program: Conspiracy! For much of the last century, mostly Far Right groups or people engaged in conspiracy theorizing often to scapegoat others who were considered legitimate targets for the mainstream to blame their overall sociopolitical dilemmas of the time. European Jews conspiring against Germany and Christian Germans, according to the NAZI’s, is one famous example. The KKK and Neo-Nazis targeting blacks by trying to re-interpret the US Constitution is another. Chip Berlet looks at modern day examples. More... The show aired from 6pm to 8pm.

Democracy Now! (rebroadcast from Monday)
Michael Pollan on “Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual” Michael Pollan, the author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food, discusses the link between healthcare and diet, the dangers of processed foods, the power of the meat industry lobby, the “nutritional-industrial complex,” the impact industrial agriculture has on global warming, and his sixty-four rules for eating. “The markets are full of what I call edible food-like substances that you have to avoid,” says Michael Pollan. “So a lot of the rules are to help you, you know, navigate that now very treacherous landscape of the American supermarket.” Today we air an excerpt of the Oscar-nominated documentary Food, Inc. and then spend the rest of the show with Michael Pollan. Eco-Logic
On drinking water, natural gas and hydraulic fracturing. Exploding toilets. Exploding wells. Contaminated drinking water. This is what has happened in other states that have allowed Halliburton's hydraulic fracturing process to reach natural gas deposits in shale. Chesapeake Energy Corporation put out a press release on Oct. 28 stating they won't drill in New York City's watershed. What does that really mean? What about the other companies that are taking out drilling leases? What about the rest of the state? Why is the governor allowing these leases? What does the NYC City Council pronouncement on the subject really mean? What about other dangers to the water supplies? Why isn't all drinking water protected from any and all pollution? What about the already-contaminated water in Pennsylvania and other states? We already do without the gas. We cannot do without the water. Hosted by Ken Gale. The second hour of a special two-hour show.

Back of the Book
This was a pitching program, and we raised a tally of $1,155. We are informed that listeners pledged an additional $50 to this program on the Web site raising our total tally to $1,205. Thanks to everyone who pledged. We talked about the Obama Administration's deployment of anti-missile systems on ships located off the coast of Iran, and in a number of countries in the middle east. This is eyebrow raising. Do they expect something serious to happen soon? In other Obama administration news we talked about the decision to scrap the NASA programs that were to have humans land on the Moon again by 2020, and prepare to go to Mars. The administration is also calling for a halt to NASA's Constellation program, which has spent the last few years developing new rockets and other hardware to put humans in higher orbits and implement the Moon missions. We also talked about the Lancet disavowing a 1998, article that claimed a connection between autism and vaccines because further research has debunked the claims. And we talked about paleontologists discovering the colors of dinosaurs. And we pitched.
